Before thinking about a knee prosthesis, get to know osteotomy. The Cugat Institute's approach to the treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee.

The Cugat Institute's approach to the treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee is based on a comprehensive assessment of the patient, taking into account his or her limitations, expectations and specific characteristics, such as age and level of joint wear and tear. Often, patients arrive seeking a second opinion, having received the recommendation of a knee prosthesis as the only option. However, the Cugat Institute is committed to conservative treatments before considering surgical intervention.

In cases of global wear and tear of the knee, a conservative approach is suggested including weight control, physical therapy and specific exercises, along with platelet-rich plasma infiltrations. If this approach is not sufficient, revision arthroscopy and joint cleaning can be performed to improve mobility.

When the wear affects only part of the knee, solutions such as orthopedic insoles that redistribute the loads on the knee are considered. In more severe cases, when conservative treatment is not effective, surgery is used, combining arthroscopy and corrective osteotomy to realign the knee and reduce pain. This surgery also makes it possible to correct leg deformities such as varus or valgus.

The postoperative period includes a progressive rehabilitation program, with the use of crutches for at least eight weeks. The results are usually favorable, allowing the patient to recover mobility, and in many cases, to return to physical and sporting activities between 6 and 8 months after the intervention.
